Munich Olympic stadium set for major overhaul

(c) 1995 Reuter Information Service

MUNICH, Germany (November 30, 1995) - Munich's Olympic stadium, built for the 1972 Games and home of Germany's richest soccer club Bayern Munich, is set for a major overhaul to make it more attractive for football.

Bayern chairman Franz Beckenbauer has 100-million-mark ($69 million) plans for the stadium which include the construction of VIP boxes, restaurants, shops, garages and modernised stands which would increase the capacity to 80,000.

Stadium organisers said on Thursday they expected to come to a final decision next Monday after talks with the architect Guenther Benisch who designed the complex which is famous for its transparent tent-like roofs.

Benisch's permission is required before any change can be made to the construction. He has been studying the plans and has seen the need to take the stadium into the 21st century. Work is expected to start in 1997.

Germany is also planning to bid for the 2006 World Cup finals. The Olympic stadium would be expected to host the final again as it did in the 1974 tournament and the 1988 European championship finals.
